Observation 1 – Democracy as we know it.

The “State” not only provides the realm in which the debate on democracy takes place, but it also limits thought and discourse based on predetermined assumptions about politics as being based around enactment of policy. This means that we focus on USFG action instead of ourselves as being the site of politics.

Badiou 2005 (Alain, “Metapolitics” Pg. 41)

This category of ‘factory’ authorizes...worker are the places of the pairing.

And furthermore, this creates a normative discussion on the nature of the “good State” rather than politics as an end instead of means.

Badiou 2005 (Alain, “Metapolitics” Pg. 82)

Thus, our original starting point, ...this organized freedom pronounces its own verdict on the State.

So, can ‘democracy’ be relevant?...three Leninist hypotheses.

The inability of the State to think means that there can be no politics as thought in the resolution which address democracy. This means that we must turn to another site to debate the merits of democracy and the political.

Badiou 2005 (Alain, “Metapolitics” Pg. 87)

In passing, ...One is then able to advance a provisional conclusion: ‘democracy’s is a category of philosophy only when it designates something other than a form of the State. But what?

      1AC 4/8
The impact is that tyranny is inevitable. The restriction of democracy to the state instead of a philosophical concept means that we are unable to escape the constant downward spiral toward domination.

Badiou 2011 (Alain “The Democratic Emblem” in “Democracy in What State” Agamben et. al pg. 12-14)

Plato is a sure and perceptive guide to the panorama of modern society, ...For the democratic nonworld is a leakage of time. Consumption is consuming it.

(we do not defend the gendered language of the card.)

      1AC 5/8
Observation 2 – Refocusing the political

In order to establish a truly productive debate about democracy we must re-consider democracy in terms of politics, not as a form of the State. Thus, this we must take this year’s resolution as an opportunity to interrogate what it really means to “assist democracy.”

Agamben 2011 (Giorgio, “Introductory Note on the Concept of Democracy” in the book “Democracy in What State?” pg. 4)

Today we behold the overwhelming preponderance of the government and the economy over anything you could call popular sovereignty...either as a form of constitution or as a technique of government, is likely to collapse into mere chatter.

      1AC 6/8
Thus we affirm the following as the starting point to debate democratic politics: The Egyptian Revolution.

Badiou 2011 (Alain, “The Universal Reach of Popular Uprisings” http://www.lacan.com/thesymptom/?page_id=1031)

The popular uprising we speak about is obviously without a Party...the organized faithfulness to the communism of movement taking on the state.

      Observation 3 - Solvency

The affirmative is a prerequisite to any better form of democracy. Any attempts at democracy assistance in the status quo are an endorsement of state-based democracy.

Badiou 2005 (Alain, “Metapolitics” Pg. 80)

If one now represents philosophy as that which designates...and so too the end of all relevance for the word ‘democracy’.

This is not anarchy, but rather a relegation of the State to a distance from the sphere of politics. There are certain issues and functions that can be mediated by the state.

Badiou and Hallward 1998 (Alain and Peter, Politics and Philosophy An Interview with Alain Badiou available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09697259808572002)

The third and final point of change concerns the state....we have to work more through prescriptions against the state than in any radical exteriority to the state.

and Bensaid 2011 (Daniel “Permanent Scandal” in Democracy in What State? Agamben et al. pp. 27-28)

The withering away of the State...the onset of a process and not its completion.
